i paint landscapes and still life from observation. my work is figurative but not strictly representative as i see little point in reproducing what can be said with a camera. i push the work until the image on the canvas takes on a life of its own. while the subjects i paint remain central to the image of the finished work they do not provide the impetus for my painting. for me the principle motivation for painting is to engage with oil paint and the process of painting itself. as James Elkins (2000) has noted ’for a painter paint is the life’s blood: a substance so utterly entrancing, infuriating and ravishingly beautiful that it makes it worth spending a life-time labouring with it’ (p:5).

examples of my work are often on display at Courtyard Arts Centre Hertford Herts, Parndon Mill Gallery Harlow Essex, Church Street Gallery in Saffron Walden Essex, or by appointment at my studio in Bengeo Hertford
